Largest South African Ethnic Group
South Africa has one of the most complex ethnic patterns in Africa. It is this complexity that was used to separate people racially during the infamous apartheid era.

The blacks form the largest group in South Africa constituting 75 percent of the population, with whites constituting just 13.6 percent.
However, the largest South African ethnic group is the Zulu. According to recent estimates, it is believed that Zulu community basically lives in KwaZulu-Natal, which is province in South Africa. There are around 11 million people belonging to the Zulu community living in South Africa. Their language is known as isiZulu, which is Bantu language.
Although KwaZulu-Natal province is the home of Zulu, you can find many Zulu living in cities because of employment. Most Zulu looking for prosperity migrate to the province of Gauteng.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Zulu, the largest South African ethnic group, suffered a lot under apartheid. They were classified as third-class citizens of Africa and faced a lot of discrimination. However, today have been imparted equal rights. In addition, the Zulus play an important role in politics. There have two Deputy Presidents in South Africa who were Zulus.
However, the majority of the Zulu community is still struggling to eke out a living, which is the result of apartheid. Efforts are being made to bring this ethnic group into main stream. In addition, there are other large ethnic groups in South Africa who also suffered under apartheid and these include Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, Shangana-Tsongo and Swazi. Hopefully the next few years will be better for ethnic groups living in South Africa.
