Why Did The Europeans Go To South Africa

Centuries ago, the Europeans decided that they wanted to conquer the world. It started with the Romans and Greeks who were going to faraway lands and making them their own.

The Europeans knew that if they wanted to establish a true dominion, it would have to start with Africa.

However, the question still remains why did the Europeans go to South Africa? If you look at South Africa, you know that the country has a lot of natural resources, including diamonds and gold. No doubt these natural resources would tempt anyone to come and try their luck. Many Europeans came here to find their fortune. In addition, the Europeans also came as missionaries in an attempt to spread Christianity among the natives. One of the most famous missionaries was David Livingstone who established many missions in South Africa.

The other reason why the Europeans came to South Africa was to get slaves. Many European nations were vigorously in slave trade transporting labor to the New World where they put them to work in plantations in horrible circumstances. The Spanish transported slaves from South Africa to South America, Caribbean and West Indies. Then there were the Dutch, British and French.

Unfortunately many South Africans were put onto slave ships and transported across the Atlantic in horrible conditions. These unfortunate people were made to work in plantations in North and South America helping to grow sugar cane, tobacco and cotton, which were shipped back to Europe.

The Dutch, known as Boers, came and settled in South Africa. They had farms and ranches but treated the native people very badly even centuries ago.
