Congo, especially, has undertaken several mining activities after the demand for diamonds increased tremendously. Today, environmental questions are being raised as diamond mining is stripping the countryside and demands are being made to stop the mining of diamonds.
In addition, it is believed that the demand for diamonds has created a lot of political strife in Congo. People were being exploited and killed by the miners who were rivaling the government and have access to the deadliest weapons due to the turnover from diamond trade. Congo government even appealed to the United States government concerned about the wealth that diamond mining is generating for warlords and as a result they can arm themselves with the most modern arms and ammunition. Until the civil war, Congo government was in power but in reality the true power lies in the hands of diamond mine owners.
Congo is the second largest diamond producer in the world and is the top supplier of diamonds to the United States and Australia. Diamonds sell largest by their gradation and quality of clarity.
