The Kingdom of Egypt, which was officially formed in 1922, lasted till 1953. After that, democracy took over. The British ruled Egypt somewhere from 1882, when they first invaded the country in a large scale, and started their exit around 1914 actually. The British first occupied the Ottoman Empire and during World War I in 1914 they started moving out.
During the British rule, several things were established in the empire like rail road systems and other kinds of amenities. When World War 1 was declared, the British government appointed Hussein Kamil as the Sultan of Egypt. Soon enough a strong nationalist group started opposing the British government and demanded the replacement of their King. The Muslim Brotherhood was also beginning to form in the 1914 with the Palestine confusion with the Arabs going on. World War 1 had a large effect on the independence of Egypt.
The British were strongly opinionated about controlling the Suez Canal and this gave birth to several minor opposition parties for the British. The main idea being conquering Egypt was to control the Suez Canal which connected the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. However, Suez Canal was increasingly becoming inaccessible due to World War1 and the trade stopped to several places that depended on the canal. Thereafter, British interest in Suez Canal reduced and they started withdrawing from the Kingdom of Egypt and thereby allowing the Kingdom to gain its independence.
