Roles Of Men In Ancient Egypt

Men and women were considered different in ancient Egypt but they mostly shared equal rights. Women were completely used to domestic activities as per many hieroglyphics and they were involved in raising children and families. Men were more involved in farming and trade activities.

The hieroglyphics show men and women partaking in public events on equal grounds and are seen drinking or eating together. In addition, women are shown milking the cow, bathing children, involved in household chores and also involved in market places.

Men and women were buried in individual tombs and the wives were buried next to their husband’s tomb. When the administration pattern was being established in Egypt the hieroglyphics correspond to the active involvement of men in administration.

When this began, the position of women weakened perhaps. Women were only seen as a part of group statues with men becoming more active. This was during medieval Egypt. From the paintings on the grave, it was inferred that women were seen serving their men, cooking, baking and also making beer. The husbands were looked after mainly by their wives. In spite of being a male dominated society, the paintings show that women enjoyed social life.

It is when an administrative system and government system was started men were used to exploring more countries women seemed to have a more gender specific role. They were later conformed to household chores and were not shown in public gatherings which indicated that they lived restricted lives.

The roles of men in ancient Egypt were that of protector of their families, administrative service, trade, decision making and farming. Men had more social freedom compared to women, who were confined to their quarters and were not allowed to receive visitors.
