The Surma Of Ethiopia
Surma is a dissectible name for the form of government prevalent in Ethiopia. Suri and Mursi are two major sects that speak different languages in the country and the government formed by joining these two tribes is called the Surma. Sometimes, Suri and Surma are used interchangeably. |
The Suri people belong to the pastoral regions of the country and their language is based on the Nilo Saharan language, the same language that is spoken in Sudan borders. Mursi are also an integral part of the Surma and they are from the low lying pastoral regions.
Suri women are wear plates in the lower lip. These plates are made of clay and the entire plate is fixed between the lip and the jaw in such a way that the lip gets extended forming a rudder to the plate. This is a tribal custom and people have been carrying this tradition for ages.
The Suri people lived mainly in the southwestern parts of Ethiopia. Their main occupation was herding cattle and tilling the land for crops. During the war, even the Suri women would carry rifles to protect their cattle and family.
The Suri are untouched by the modern world and these places are not generally accessible by tourist. They are not friendly and keep to their business. They are restricted to the Suri land which is closely located to the Sudan border and it is spread across 42 square kilometers. They are not concerned with the rest of the country and the modern food and amenities mean very little to them.
