Who Are The Indigenous People Of Ethiopia ?
Indigenous people mean tribes and Ethiopia has several tribes. The tribes here mainly tend to cattle in the pastures of the country. The pastoral people are mainly indigenous tribes and the Surma or Suri tribe is considered one of them. |
The Surma people have caught the eye of several historians and also people from the National Geographic because of their weird customs. However, there are several tribes throughout the hilly regions of Ethiopia.
Most of the indigenous people of Ethiopia live in the Omo River region and they coexist in harmony. They participate in trade and warfare equally. The modern civilization means nothing for them. However, the only tool from the modern days that they hold is the rifle. It is the possession of the rifle by many pastorals that is causing problems among the tribes that once existed peacefully.
The tribal people are very good at growing crops in this complex landscape and they manage to grow cotton, and other important crops through a complex agricultural system that only they understand. However, it is impossible to break into their lives and know their culture. One has to win their trust and this is next to impossible.
The Ethiopian government uses many tribal methods to grow the crops but even the government finds it difficult to deal with them and that is why civilization has not extended to the tribal regions of the country. Several times the government has tried to talk to them about housing and education but that does not convince the indigenous people. The government itself tried force removal of people but that only resulted in severe clashes between the government and the indigenous people of Ethiopia.
