Why Was Not Ethiopia A Colony ?
Ethiopia was always an independent state and it was never ruled by any country including the British Empire. The Italians had a hold over some parts of Ethiopia, which is called as Eritrea and later when this country declared its independence individually. |
Ethiopia was and is a landlocked country without any of its border touching the coastal line. One of the reasons why Ethiopia was not a colony is the difficult tribe that lived in country and even the civil war in their own country could not do much harm to the people. However, it is very difficult to single out any reasons as to why it was not a colony and there could be several reasons behind this.
One is people from Italy could have tried to capture Ethiopia and make it their colony. However, they could only do it until Eritrea and mainly it had to do with the geographical limitations. The pastoral people were used to the high altitudes and knew exactly how it was landscaped. It would have been extremely difficult for anyone else to do that. The Italian people could not go beyond a point and also they were not allowed to venture further by the indigenous people.
For the British, Ethiopia did not have many advantages and they did not see why they should ascend to high altitudes and conquer the place. It had no agricultural value nor was it rich in resources so the British did not think it was worth the effort perhaps. It would only add kilometers to their boundaries strategically.
