Ghana Crafts For Kids
Kids enjoy handicrafts and the best way to teach them is making them adapt to cultural handicrafts. Actually every art and craft that we know today has been adapted from some culture or the other across the world. |
Africa is a continent that has thousands of tribes and these tribes mostly use things made out of hand. What may seem to us as handicrafts and things of fancy is actually something that is used for daily needs by many of the tribes in Africa.
Ghana in Africa has several tribes who make their clothes and utensils themselves. There is no concept of consumerism in such places. For example, Adinkara is a handmade cloth used by the Ghana tribes for wearing and they make scarves and skirts out of this cloth. Adinkara can also be made by us at home using simple material. It is mainly used by the people of Ghana to wear at religious ceremonies.
To decorate the cloth simple Ashanti symbols are used. Ashanti is also a tribe of Ghana and they used the language to communicate. Every Ashanti symbol has an inner meaning. For kids, you can take a black dyed cloth and make impressions using sponges. Take the black cloth and divide it into big squares and try to depict a story with simple figures. You can use simple material to make the molds like gourds, potatoes, or sponges and foam. Once you finish working on the impression, take the cloth and some paint. Dip the impression in paint and put them on to the cloth.
