Traditional Wedding Music From Kenya
People of Kenya have a lot of music and dance during festivals and weddings. The traditional Kamba dance is performed at all weddings and this also includes the songs and music using Congo drums to go with the dance. The wedding music is mainly performed for people who dance and it is an exhilarating performance by the dancers. |
The entire wedding is depicted in the form of a song and there is huge collection of wedding songs for different steps taken during the wedding. A song is sung when the bride is wearing her wedding dress, which is white in color, and a group of women sing while she is dressing up for the occasion. And, when the bride is coming out her room to join the groom, another song is sung by a group of women to announce that the bride is stepping out.
The bride and the groom are married in a Christian fashion, and before the groom accepts the bride, the bride's family call out an answer song to which the groom's family respond and then the wedding is carried out by taking vows in front of the priest, after that there would be a lot of beer and wine to drink and food to eat. Many people sing and dance during this period and this also includes traditional Kenyan song and dance. The dance is extremely acrobatic so that it can cope with the beats of the songs and the drums.
In Kenya, traditional weddings have become a rare sight now and most people prefer a church wedding.
