When Did Burma Become Myanmar ?
Burma is officially known as the Union of Myanmar today. Burma is a huge country in size. On one side, it is bordered by China, and on the other there is India and Bangladesh. It has Laos on the east borer and Thailand on the south east border. |
Burma’s culture carries an influence of all the bordering countries like India, China and Thailand. There are all kinds of important religions like Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam in the country. Majority of the Burmese population is Bamars. Due to the diverse religions and cultures Burma was stricken with ethnic problems and religious fights. Over and above they have an unsympathetic government ruling them.
The first name Burma means Myanmar or Burmese. Now the country has reverted to its former name of Myanmar. It refers to the Bamars, which basically means the people of Burma or Myanmar. The name Burma is a modern pronunciation and it was given by the British.
In 1989, the military government of Burma changed the English translated words back into their ethnic language and so they changed the country’s name to Myanmar. However, the name of the country itself is controversial because several English speaking ethnic groups refuse to acknowledge the name change. These ethnic groups are of non Burmese origin. Also, several other countries across the world like the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France and Canada still call the country Burma. Media also uses the name Burma more than Myanmar in these countries. However, gradually the new name of the country is beginning to find acceptance within its own borders.
