Brief History Of Cambodia
Cambodia’s history can be traced to the 1st century. The country was known as Funan, and its home city was Oc Eo, which is present day Vietnam. The Romans called Oc Eo as Kattigara, which meant renowned city. |
The Funan Empire reached its height in the third century under the rule of Fan Shih-man. In the eight century this empire saw a decline and its divisions result in the rise of the Chenla Empire. The Chenla period was short. The Khmer Empire started in the 9th century and with it Cambodia began to see a Golden Age which lasted till the 14 century. During this period Cambodia saw development in all spheres -- political and cultural. The empire was at its height during the rule of Jayavarman VII.
Unfortunately the period beginning from the 15th century to the 19th century saw a decline in the Cambodia. Its neighbors Siam and Vietnam were becoming more and more powerful. Cambodia became Siam's protectorate, and Mekong Delta as annexed by Vietnam. In 1863, Cambodia became a French protectorate. The period of French rule continued for 90 years, and ended when Cambodia won independence in 1953.
The 1950s and 1960s saw Cambodia as a prosperous country, In the 1970s, the Vietnamese war spilling into Cambodia, and General Lon Nol overthrew Prince Sihanouk in 1975 the Khemr Rouge overthrew Lon Nol's government and then ensued a four year period of terror in which about 1.7 million people were killed. The Khmer Rouge was ousted in 1979, and resulted in the formation of the People's Republic of Kampuchea.
