Cambodia Angkor Wat Travel Guide
One of the most important places to visit in Cambodia is Angkor Wat. This is a temple complex that was constructed for King Suryavarman II in the twelfth century. Today it stands a prime example of Khmer architecture and also appears in the country’s national flag. Unfortunately two centuries from the time it was built, this temple was abandoned, and it was covered in forest growth till a French naturalist discovered it in 1861. The temple is made up of numerous structures which together are known as Angkor. The main sub complexes situated at the top of the temple are Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei and Angkor Thom.
The temple is made up of 5 central shrines. These shrines are surrounded by a moat. The west side of the temple has a pathway that runs over the moat leading into a giant portico. The shrines all have 3 levels, each of which is connected by staircases. The entire structure leads into a central pyramidal tower in which lies the temple sanctuary.
Angkor can be reached in 20 minutes from central Siem Reap. The ideal time to visit Angkor Wat is from 1 pm to 2 pm. It is also best to come at sunrise as the views are simply magnificent at this time. Tour buses, Taxis, Helicopter Flights and Tuk Tuks. Within Angkor Archeological Parks there are even Elephant Rides and Horse carriages available to certain points of the temple precincts.
