The history of discovery goes way back to 2000 BCE when Austronesian people who originally came from Taiwan arrived and settled there. Buddhism and Hinduism were the influences during the Srivijaya rule and other dynasties such as Sailendra and Mataram ruled and declined in the land. The origin of Islam dates back to the thirteenth century and started spreading owing to the trade that Indonesia had with several other countries outside the islands. Christianity was also active during the sixteenth century and 17th century, and hence, we now find the people following various religions and cultures.
The arrival of the Europeans during the sixteenth century and subsequently the Dutch following them to get natural resources such as spices made trade the most prominent. Bankruptcy led to the fall of the European power and the Dutch were overthrown by the Japanese invasion.
The first nationalist movement took place in the month of October in 1908 and was called Budi Utomo. Sarekat Islam was the first huge nationalist movement that had 93,000 people as its members. Nationalist leaders were professionals and students who had come from the Netherlands. Also, the first president of Indonesia, Mr. Sukarno, was one of the nationalist leaders.
The history of Indonesia is as colorful as other countries with invasions, battles, successions and the likes. Today, Indonesia has grown to be one of the largest Countries in the world with a huge population. Though natural calamities like the Tsunami and Earthquakes have devastated some of the areas of Sumatra and Aceh; the place is a haven for tourists and the people who live out there.
