Indonesia is a Country that is located in the Southeast part of Asia and is an archipelago between the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. The geographical coordinates are 5 00 S, 120 00 E. It is scattered as a chain of islands between Asia and Australia. The area of Indonesia is 2 million in square kilometers and is thrice the size of the state of Texas in United States. |
The maritime area of the place is 7,900,000 square kilometers. The total area may be classified as 1,919,440 square kilometers with the land taking up 1,826,440 squrare kilometers and water at 93,000 square kilometers.
The main islands in Indonesia are Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and New Guinea. It also consists of two of the major archipelagos namely Nusa Tenggara and the Maluku Islands and sixty other small archipelagoes.
Indonesia is bounded by the border by other countries such as East Timor at 228 kilometers, Malaysia at 1,782 kilometers and Papua New Guinea at 820 kilometers. The coastline of Indonesia measures 54,716 kilometers and the maritime claims that were measured from archipelagic straight baselines are territorial sea at 12nm and exclusive economic zone at 200nm.
The terrain of Indonesia is mostly coastal lowlands and the interior mountains are located in the larger islands. The climate here is tropical and can be hot and humid but in the highlands the climate tends to get moderate.
The extreme elevation points are -- the lowest being the Indian Ocean at 0 meter, and the highest being Puncak Jaya at 5,030 meters. Natural hazards are earthquakes, floods, droughts, tsunamis, volcanoes and forest fires.
