Capital Of Laos
The capital of Laos is Vientiane. The city gets its name from Pali, which is also the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism, meaning 'The Royal Sandal Grove or the City of Sandalwood'. Vientiane is located in the Mekong Valley of Laos. Being the largest city of Laos, this has an estimated population of over 200,000 in the year 2005. |
According to the epic of Phra Lak Phra Lam, it is believed that Vientiane was established by Prince Thattaradtha, when he left his kingdom of Muong Inthapatha Maha Nakhone. He had to give way for his younger brother who was offered the throne of the kingdom. Alternatively, there is another side to the founding of Vientiane which says that the Khmer settlers moved into the area and were later ambushed by the Lao and Thai people to possess the entire place and rule over them.
Vientiane is located along the curve of the Mekong River, at a point where it forms a border with Thailand.
The climate is tropical with a wet and dry season. The wet season begins in April and lasts through several months the dry period is from November to March.
There are many famous places to visit in Vientiane namely the Buddha Park, the Haw Phra Kaew which was earlier a temple and now become a museum with many shops. Some other interesting places to visit are Lao National Museum, the Patuxay monument, Pha That Luang -- which is the Buddhist stupa.
There is also the morning market -- Talat Sao; That Dam which has the large stupa; Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan; Wat Si Muang; Wat Si Saket, which is the Buddhist temple; and Wat Sok Pa Luang, which is another Buddhist temple.
