Facts About Vietnam Veterans Memorial
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is popularly referred to as The Wall or VV. It was established by Jan Scruggs. He served as an infantry corporal between the years 1969 and 1970. The memorial was constructed in order to acknowledge all those brave warriors (living or dead) who served during the Vietnam War. |
In that sense, it is not typically a war memorial which is built to commemorate the service of only the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
The VVMF (Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund) was founded in the year 1979 on April 27. This non-profitable organization was started by John Wheeler and Robert Double, the veterans of the Vietnam War. The 2-acre plot has been dedicated for this charitable organization in the Constitution Gardens. The initial support was given by the senators of the United States during that time, Charles McC. Mathias, Jr. of Maryland and John W. Warner of Virginia.
The approval to construct the memorial was signed in the year 1980 on July 1 at the Rose Garden. It took about three and a half years to build this structure. The design of the structure and the building plan was approved in the year 1982 on March 11th. Construction began on March 16th the same year. The breaking of the ground to lay the foundation took place on 26th of March. The landscaping was completed the same year in November and the entire memorial with the statue, the wall and the flag were all completed in the year 1984 on November 11.
