With a recorded population was 79,939,014 during July 2001, Vietnam became the thirteen most populated country in the world. Among Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam is the second most populated country after Indonesia.
A steady increase in the population was noted from 1979 to 2001. In the year 1979, the recorded population was 52,741,766. It increased to 64,411,713 ten years later. In the year 1996, the population of Vietnam was noted to be 75,355,200.
Vietnam is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with 242.6 persons every square kilometers. Though the country occupies 3.5 percent of the area of the US, the total population in Vietnam is almost one-third the recorded population of the United States.
In 2001, the population growth was estimated to be about 1.45 percent. With this calculation in mind, experts have predicted that by 2051, the country would have double the number of people reaching to about 160 million.
About 2.49 children are estimated for every Vietnamese woman in the country. However, with increased awareness among the population, the fertility and growth rate is being curbed considerably. Approximately thirty-two percent of the population is under 15 years, which means the country relatively has a large number of youngsters.
Around 54 different nationalities are found in the country which explains the vast diversity in culture. However, 85 percent to around 90 percent of the entire population is Vietnamese. This means the number of other nationalities in Vietnam is very meager.
