Who Won The Vietnam War ?
After several years of war even today the question on who really won the Vietnam War is still unanswered. The Vietnam War ended on 30 April of 1975 after a long fight. Saigon was captured by the communists and General Duong Vanh Minh surrendered to the North Vietnamese army. |
Several troops marched into the city and the US had to evacuate their personnel in a hurried manner. They all collected on top of the US Embassy and were air lifted from there. Several Marines made it but there were many more that could not make it. Many soldiers died and a lot of them went missing. That is why even today we cannot tell who won the War and if it was a wasted effort.
Vietnam did not receive a reparation payment from the United States for the severe loss of life. However they reached a mutual agreement in Paris in 1993 and Hanoi had to acknowledge the debts of the Saigon Rule at that time. Also, Vietnam had to oblige to pay compensation to Washington for the tremendous costs of the war.
After the diplomatic relationships were set in place in Washington in 1994, several people deemed that America’s interference was unnecessary and improper.
As the question stays nobody really won the Vietnam War. It is only considered as an unspoken victory for the United States but there was no real outcome of the war, and it was just a wasted fight. Vietnam War could have been avoided with diplomacy and making the right decisions by the government at that time.
