Mountain Night Driving Tips
Mountain driving is quite different from driving on flat roads, and more so when you are thinking of mountain night driving.
|
However, following some mountain night driving tips will prepare you better for taking on the challenges posed by driving at nights on undulating mountain roads.
Mountain Night Driving Tips:
- Before embarking on your trip, make sure that the car brakes, axle and headlights are working properly. Even check your hazard lights as you might have to park on the mountain side should a problem develop in your car.
- When driving on mountain roads, the most important part is knowing how to drive downhill. Make sure drive in 3, 2 or 1 gear when driving downhill. Never use neutral as you will have to use your brakes a lot to slow down.
- When driving uphill, make sure that you use low gears to climb. This reduces the strain on the engine and does not allow it to overheat.
- When driving on the mountain in the night, make sure you stay on your side of the road or lane.
- Make sure that all your headlights, taillights and windows are clean. Pay special attention to the windows as unclean or dirty windows can restrict vision and increase the glare of oncoming cars' headlights.
- Pay special attention to your headlights to ensure that they are aligned properly so that you can easily see the road ahead of you.
- When driving at night on a mountain, do not be under misconception that other drivers will also be driving on their side of the lane. To avoid any mishap, make sure that you are driving slowly so that you are not surprised if another vehicle from the opposite direction is on the same lane as you. You will have the time to brake and horn to warn the other driver.
