France has a semi-presidential rule and the president is determined by the French Constitution. France calls itself to be an indivisible, democratic, secular and social republic. The main divisions of the government are executive, judicial and legislative assemblies. The President and the Prime Minister share powers. The ruling cabinet can be invoked by the senate or the national assembly.
The Prime Minister is a position that is supported by the majority of the house. The Senate is responsible for passing the votes, statutes and prepares the budget. France has a civil law system, which is based on the Napoleonic codes. The constitution of the Fifth Republic contains the Bill of Rights.
France fought several wars that actually weakened its constitution. The French Revolution took a toll on France’s economy and the people were suppressed to an authoritarian rule under Napoleon Bonaparte. However, Napoleon managed to defend France from foreign attack. King Louis XVIII managed to overthrow Napoleon’s power and got things in order. However, under Napoleon’s rule, the industrialization was good and the middle class prospered. This did not happen during King Louis’s reign. There was a call for change and the king was sent into exile. He was the last of the Bourbon’s to rule. This paved way for the Third Republic, and then the Franco-Prussian war took place in 1870. It was after the First World War that the Fifth Republic and current republic came into being.
