Was Pizza Invented In Italy ?
Pizza was considered as a meal of the peasants for centuries in Italy. So, we really cannot say where and who invented the first pizza. |
Many food historians have agreed that pizza pies were eaten by the Mediterranean people, and that includes the Egyptians and the Greeks besides the Italians.
However, the modern pizzas have been attributed to Raffaele Esposito, a baker in Naples. In the year 1889, Raffaele Esposito baked in his own restaurant, Pizzeria di Pietro, a pizza to honor the visit of the Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita.
In North America, the first pizzeria was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1905 at 53 1-3 Spring Street in New York City. The very first Pizza Hut appeared during the year 1930 in the United States. Pizza Hut is a chain of pizza restaurants up to today. However, Rose Totino invented the frozen pizza.
The most popular pizza topping is the pepperoni slices. It is the number one choice of toppings in the United States. Then, varieties of other toppings from ham and cheese, bacon and ham, and many more came out. In fact, today many pizzerias cater to local population based on the taste in a particular country. For instance, in Japan, a combination of potato, mayonnaise, and bacon called the Mayo Jaga, squid and eel are the favorite toppings for pizzas. The Russians love herring pizza. This has prompted different pizza serving restaurants in different countries to continuously develop delicious toppings for their pizzas; and many people have their own favorite pizza toppings.
