Trevi Fountain History

The credit for the design of the fountain goes to Nicola Salvi, who was commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732. It took 30 years to build the fountain, and it was finally completed in 1762.
This fountain is not the first fountain to be built on that site. Before that another fountain was planned to be constructed by Pope Nicholas V in the 15th century, which was demolished in the 17th century. The fountain is famous mainly for the architecture and the paintings.
The Aqua Virgo which was made to supply the water to the fountain is still in a good condition and is still responsible for supplying water to the fountain. It was the only source of water which has never failed to provide water to the Romans. Even after the construction this fountain, the Pope Nicholas was not comfortable with the design of the fountain. So, he asked sculptor Bernini to change the design. But at that time the Pope died and along with him the whole new construction project, which was given to the sculptor Bernini, was shelved. Even after that, Bernini constructed a part for the fountain. The water which flowed from the fountain was considered good, and slowly people started believing that drinking the water from the fountain would bring good fortune.
There are many statues which were constructed along with this fountain by many sculptors. They are a part of the fountain and add to the beauty of the fountain.
