Maastricht is the capital of Limburg. It is situated on the Belgian border and near the German border; in the south eastern part of the Netherlands. This city is full of historic monuments, though some of them have been restored as homes, restaurants or stores. It is said that this city has not seen many changes from the 16th century. Some sights to be visited in and around Maastricht are the historical monuments in the city such as the Helpoort, which is a 13th century town gate; Casemates, which is an underground tunnel network; the Markt Square, which is totally traffic-free and houses the town hall and a brand new shopping center called the Mosae Forum; Entre Deux is another shopping center which has won many international awards and boasts of a book store inside what was once a Dominican Church; Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Plein is a square which has many cafes; Saint-Pietersberg, which is a hill situated south of Maastricht; and Bassin, which is an inner harbor that has been restored with many restaurants and cafes and different parks in the city.
You can reach Maastricht by train from Brussels, Amsterdam and several other major European cities. You can also travel to Maastricht easily as it is connected to many other holiday destinations such as Pisa, Girona and Alicante. Bus services are also available for travel within the city, and to most parts of South Limburg and some parts of Belgium and Germany.
