Transylvania is a historic region located in northwestern and central part of Romania.

It is a plateau that is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains and the Transylvanian Alps. It was the hub for the Dacian kingdom, and was the Roman province of Dacia around the second century AD. In the 9th century, Transylvania was captured by the Magyars, and later it was divided into two among the Habsburg and the Ottoman Empire. However, under the Turks, Transylvania was an autonomous region.

In the 17th century, Transylvania became a part of Hungary, which was then controlled by the Habsburg. Once the Austro-Hungarian Empire was defeated in World War I, the Romanian majority living in Transylvania joined Romania and became part of the country.

Although Transylvania has been a scene of bitter fighting by the various kingdoms and empires that wanted to control the region, it has retained its natural beauty and charm. The Land Beyond the Forest, as its name translate into from Latin, was a significant region that different kingdoms wanted to control.

The cities of Transylvania, namely Bistrita, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Medias, Sebes, Sibiu and Sighisoara, have managed to survive all the invasions, even the tyrannical rule of a dictator from 1965 to 1989.

The official language in Romania is Romanian. It is spoken by around 89 percent of the people living in the country. The other languages that are spoken in the country are Hungarian and German. Hungarian is spoken by 7 percent of the population, and majority of the Hungarian speaking population lives in Transylvania. So, also when it comes to the German speaking population.

The Romanian majority living in Transylvania speak Romanian. The Hungarian and German minority speak Hungarian and German respectively. The Roma population, or the gypsies, living in Transylvania has its own language that is quite akin to the language spoken in northern part of India. The Hungarians and Germans minorities living in Transylvania hate the Romanians because of the past and their shared history. That is the reason why they refuse to speak Romanian language.
