The village of Zurich is quaint and has retained its Swiss heritage, when the first settlers came here nearly 150 years ago. It is located in Huron County and hosts the Zurich Bean Festival for a single day each year. This festival attracts thousands of people from all over the world, but primarily the visitors are from Canada and the US.
The population of the village of Zurich is just 900, but on the day of the festival, it surges to a massive 25,000. On the day of the festival, nearly 2500 pounds of white beans is baked using a secret recipe, which is closely guarded by the locals. In addition, 180 loins of pork and huge amounts coleslaw and apple sauce is prepared. All food preparation takes a week before the official festival day.
The people who visit the Zurich Bean Festival enjoy the delicious bean and pork dishes and then wander off to watch the show of antique and classic cars. This show first started in 1987, and now attracts more than 800 antique and classic car and truck owners who come to showcase their beloved vehicles.
The Zurich Bean Festival starts on a Friday night with a magnificent display of fireworks, and continues into Saturday when tourists and visitors can visit stalls set up to sell agricultural produce and crafts. In addition, children can get their face painted, watch clowns or be enthralled by magic shows. Adults are not forgotten, and they can take part in Dr. Wallace's Frog Jumping Contest and many other similar and entertaining contests and shows.
