Avoiding Theft :

You need to exercise caution in order to save yourself from pickpockets, muggers and scam artists. It is especially important to be alert when using public transport. Beware of people who offer to be your guide. These people might turn out to be thieves.

Only take taxis clearly identified with official markings. Beware of unmarked cabs. Trains are a common place where tourists can get robbed. Well-organized robbery of passengers on trains along popular tourist routes is a serious problem. In some countries, travelers have been drugged by offering them something to eat or drink. Do not accept food or drink from strangers. If it is possible, lock your compartment. Tie your luggage to the seat with the help of a chain. If possible, try to keep your luggage under you while sleeping. If there is a problem, inform the policemen present on the train.

Keep a low profile and avoid loud conversations or arguments. In crowded places, beware of pickpockets. Pickpockets will try to distract your attention by engaging you in a talk, or pushing you. Be careful of children who beg for alms. They may turn out to be pickpockets.

Your luggage in the hotel also needs to be protected. Keep your hotel door locked at all times. Do not leave money and other valuables in your hotel room while you are out.  Read the fire safety instructions in your hotel room.  Learn a few local phrases so that you can call for help in the case of an emergency.
