Bahrain Culture
The Bahraini culture is influenced by the Islamic principles. As per the principles of Islam, the Bahrainis offer their prayers five times a day, to the almighty. |
During Ramadan, the holy period of fasting for the Muslims, they abstain from eating and drinking during daytime. They break their fast at sunset, with a feast consisting of dates and rice.Like most Islamic Arab countries, the dress code needs to conform to their culture. Nevertheless, Bahrainis in the urban areas are quite liberal as far as dress code is concerned. However, the tourists are expected to dressed decently, if not conservatively. The women should be covered from below the neck to the legs. The same dress code applies for the men.
Bahrainis love their food and like most Middle East Arab countries, the food consists of varieties of rice dishes, fresh vegetables, meat like chicken, mutton and fish impregnated with marinades and a dash of wide range of spices. However, the most popular dish is the “machbous”. This dish is made up of meat or fish and is served with plain rice. The most popular traditional desserts are the “Muhammar” and “Halwa”. Muhammar is made from a combination of brown rice and dates or sometimes sugar. Halwa is a jellylike sweet.
Sports are an integral part of Bahraini culture. Football is the most common modern sport. Traditional sports like horse riding, falconry, hare and gazelle hunting are also popular with a section of Bahrainis.
The Bahraini is culture is liberal tolerant towards followers of other religions as well.
