History Of Gaza Strip
Gaza strip has a history of over 3500 years. |
Much of the domination of other Empires and countries over Gaza strip resulted due to Gaza, the capital city, being a prosperous and an important city for trade, on the Mediterranean coast. The first mention of the existence of this strip was in the 15 century BC when Joshua is believed to have subjugated Gaza and make it a part of the Holy land. In the 13th century BC, the Philistines arrived in Gaza, and made it a prominent city on the coast for trade. Subsequently, it has been occupied by various Assyrian, Egyptian, Babylonians, Israelite and then the Persian, Greek and Roman dynasties.
The domination of Muslim dynasties over the Gaza strip started in 640 AD and continued for over 1500 years with the Ottoman dynasty, ruling this land from the 16th century AD to 19th century AD.
Finally, the British forces conquered and established their rule in this strip, during the First World War. The British Empire had to relinquish their control over the Gaza strip with the termination of the British Mandate. The British Mandate had allowed the British Empire to legally administer over Palestine and this mandate had the approval of the League of Nations.
In 1947, the United Nations, as part of its Partition Plan, proposes to make the Gaza strip a part of a new Arab territory, but this proposal was rejected by the Arabs and the tumult in Gaza strip continued with the control wresting between the Egyptians and then the Israelites.
