The Language Of Gaza Strip
Gaza strip is a narrow piece of coastal land bound by Mediterranean Sea on one side and Egypt and Israel on the other. |
It is not officially recognized as a sovereign country but it is recognized as part of the Palestinian territories. The official language of Gaza Strip, like most other Middle East regions, is Arabic. Different dialects of Arabic are spoken here. However, majority of the local population speaks the Western Egyptian vernacular. As this country is bordered by Egypt, on the south, the manner of speaking or the local vernacular is mainly influenced by the Egyptian Arabic due to the exodus of people across the borders, owing to political unrest. Another reason for the Egyptian vernacular of Arabic in this region can be attributed to the domination of various empires over Gaza for centuries. This region has been ruled by several empires and countries. Most notable among them are the Ottoman Empire, The British Empire, Egypt and lately, Israel. In the 19th century, Gaza was made a part Egypt and subsequently the culture and language of this region was influenced by Egypt. By the time the city of Gaza was recaptured, large sections of the population were Egyptians and their descendants. In the 20th century, Egypt occupied the Gaza strip and controlled it until 1967 when Israel took over the Gaza strip.
The Gaza strip is inhabited by an estimated 1.5 million Palestinians. Over 99 percent of the inhabitants are Sunni Muslims, who are followers of Islam, and the remaining are Christians.
