Which Countries Border The Gaza Strip ?
Egypt and Israel are the two countries that border the Gaza strip. This strip is located in the middle, and is on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. |
It is bordered on the southwest by Egypt. To its east, north and south, it is bounded by Israel. This coastal strip is 25 miles in length with the width of the strip varying between 4 miles to 7.5 miles across the coast. This strip covers a total land area of about 139 square miles.
Gaza strip has had a history of alien domination and in the 21st century, its control wrested in the hands of its neighboring countries, Egypt and then Israel.
The Egyptians conquered the Gaza strip and controlled it from the year 1948 to 1967, barring 4 months in 1956 when the Israeli army occupied it. During the period of Egyptian control, there was a heavy influx of refugees from Israel, who escaped Israel because of the political infighting in the country. However, Egyptians did very little to improve the living conditions, trade, commerce and employment. In fact, they did not even grant the citizenship status to the inhabitants of the Gaza strip.
Subsequently, another neighboring country, Israel trounced Egypt and occupied the Gaza strip. The strip was controlled by the Israeli army until 1994. As per the Oslo Accord, better known as the Palestinian - Israeli agreement, Israel transferred the authority to the Palestinians, on a phased manner, in May 1994. Subsequent to this transfer, the Israeli army left the Gaza City and other areas. However, it was only in the year 2005 that Israel officially declared termination of their military rule in the Gaza strip.
