History Of Iran
Iran is a huge country spread across the Middle East. The country is quite large, extending all the way from the Euphrates River to the Gulf of Persia. The history of Iran is as great as the size of the country. |
Iran was previously known as Persia. The Persian kingdom was established during the Iron Age, and this led to Persia seeing magnificent dynasties rising. Some of the dynasties that helped to make ancient Iran great were Median dynasty, Achaemenid dynasty and the Parthian dynasty.
When ancient Iran was established, it swiftly made its way to the forefront, becoming an empire to reckon with. However, this great kingdom was also conquered by numerous others, including the Greeks, Turks, Arabs and Mongol, and as a result all through the history of Iran, its borders were always dynamic.
In 633 BC, Islam made its way into Persia. This saw the Zoroastrian religion, which was being practiced in the country until that time, being sidelined. And, gradually the original religion of Iran got lost and Islam became the main religion of Persia.
For many centuries, Persia had to live with the ignominy of being ruled by foreign kingdoms. The few Persian dynasties that ruled the country never managed to sustain. Finally in 1501, Persia was united, and the country became an independent state. This happened under the Safavid dynasty. This dynasty was also instrumental in making Shia Islam the country's official religion, a practice that is even present today.
Then, from 1501 until 1979, Iran was under the rule of a shah, who was a monarch. Then, Iran had the Islamic Revolution, also in 1979, and this changed the face of the country. Iran was officially declared an Islamic Republic after the revolution on 1 April 1979.
