Cause Of Iraq War
The exact cause of Iraq war has always been debatable. However, one of the main causes of Iraq War no doubt is the US government's effort to fight terrorism. September 11, 2001 was an impetus to start the Iraq War. |
9/11 as this black day is known to people around the world is etched in everyone's mind. It was the day when the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked. It was a day when the very security of the nation was challenged by a handful of people who belonged to a terrorist outfit known as Al Qaeda.
These terrorists took over planes and forced them to crash into these buildings, killing thousands of people. Americans and people from many other nations lost their lives as a result. This changed the entire perspective the nation had against terrorism, Al Qaeda and Iraq.
The head of the terrorist outfit took refuge in Iraq. In the process of weeding him out, the war was taken to Iraq. Then Osama moved to Afghanistan. The US was not going to sit back and allow terrorists to threaten the very fabric of their society.
At the same time, the dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, was supposed to have amassed large quantities of weapons of mass destruction. He was considered a threat to the entire world and not just to the US. Saddam was viewed as a threat to the peace of the entire Middle East. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait were afraid that he would again invade a nation like he had done with Kuwait in 1990. So, when these countries asked assistance from the US to help them out, the US stepped in to do the needful. And hence, the war in Iraq started and is still continuing.
