Jerusalem is in existence since the biblical times. According to archaeological evidence, the city was established around the fourth millennium BC, making Jerusalem an ancient city of the world.

The city was the capital of King David's kingdom around 1000 BCE, and later Solomon ordered the First Temple to be constructed in Jerusalem. Many religious shrines of Christianity are present in Jerusalem. Although Muslims may not say it aloud as the fact is not mention in the Holy Quran, but Jerusalem deemed as the 3rd holiest city in Islam. It right there after the cities of Mecca and Medina.
Some of the religious heritages in Jerusalem include the Temple Mount, the Al Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The old part of Jerusalem is a UN World Heritage site. This part of the city has 4 quarters, namely Armenian, Jewish, Christian and Muslim.
In its entire history, the city of Jerusalem has been completely destroyed twice. It was under siege on 23 occasions, it was attacked at least fifty-two times, and it was captured as many as forty-four times.
One of the bones of contention between the Israelis and the Palestinians is Jerusalem. Israel taking over East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want to make into the capital of the Palestinian state, has been censured by the UN on numerous occasions.
