Who Is The Prime Minister And President Of Israel?

The most important figure in Israeli politics and government is the prime minister. He is the head of the state. While Israel does have a president, the position is an honorary one. It is the prime minister who has all the vested powers as the chief executive of the nation.

The prime minister of Israel is Benjamin Netanyahu. He belongs to the Likud Party. He lives in the prime minister's residence, which is named Beit Rosh Hamemshala, and it is located in Jerusalem.

The president of Israel is Shimon Peres. He is the ninth president to hold this office. He was elected to the office in July 2007. Peres birthplace is Poland, but he migrated to Israel in 1934 before the nation declared its independence. He is one of the founding fathers of Israel. He worked alongside David Ben Gurion and Levi Eshkol in 1947, when the political leaders of the region were making efforts to form the state of Israel. However, it was only in 1959, that Peres actually began his long political journey after being elected to the Knesset.

In Israel, once the elections have taken place, it is the president who has the responsibility to nominate a member of the parliament as the prime minister. Usually the president will take advice from all party members, and then one person is nominated. This person then has to get the vote of confidence to be sworn in as the prime minister.

Prior to Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Olmert was the prime minister of Israel. However, after March 2009 elections, even though the Likud Party was placed at the second position, it was Netanyahu who was invited to form the government by President Shimon Peres.
