The name Kuwait means “fortress built near water” in Arabic. The country gets its name from its location.


It is located on the northwestern shore of the Persian Gulf. Here some facts on Kuwait that you will find quite interesting.

  • Officially, Kuwait is known as the State of Kuwait. It is a sovereign emirate, which follows the parliamentary system of government. In fact, Kuwait has the distinction of being the first Arab country to elect a parliament.
  • Kuwait City is the capital of the country. In addition to being a political capital, it is an economic capital as well.
  • Arabic is the official language of Kuwait. However, English is widely spoken.
  • Majority of the citizens are Muslims. However, there are other religions also present in the country, namely Christianity, Hinduism and Parsi.
  • Kuwaiti Dinar is the currency used in Kuwait.
  • Kuwait has the fifth largest oil reserve in the world as of today. The oil reserves in the country were discovered in early half of the 1930s, and were exploited soon after.
  • Over 95 percent of the revenues are generated from the export of petroleum as well as petroleum products.
  • Although it is labeled as one of the smallest countries in the world, Kuwait is listed fourth among the richest countries of the world, in terms of per capita income.
  • Kuwait has granted women suffrage from 2005. Women can vote and stand for official office.
  • The traditional dress of Kuwaiti men comprises of long dish-dashes and head cloths, both white in color. The dress of women comprises of yashmak, which is a veil worn by women to cover their face in public.
