Language Of Lebanon
The official language of Lebanon is Arabic. It is also the language spoken by the Muslims, some of the Christians and the Druzes. |
Arabic is considered to be a Semitic language, and it is believed that once the Arabs took over Lebanon, they brought the language with them to the country.
There are two forms of Arabic used in Lebanon. One is the colloquial form and the other is the classical form. Basically the colloquial form of the language is the one that is spoken, and hence, there are many dialects of it. The classical form is the written one. In fact, this division of Arabic is true for all the Arab nations, and it is the language that unites all the different countries of the region.
The spoken form of Arabic used in Lebanon has come from the Arabic dialect spoken in Syria. This dialect is also used by the people of Jordan, Palestine and Syria. It has originally come from the ancient language of Aramaic.
Besides Arabic, other languages are also used in Lebanon. These include Armenian, Assyrian, French and English. In fact, it is quite common to see government announcement in Lebanon being published in French and Arabic. That is why many visitors automatically assume that French is an official language. However, it is not.
While many Assyrians live in Syria, they use Assyrian language for all religious activities, while they prefer to speak in Arabic. Assyrian is oral and modern form of Syriac, which is a dialect of the ancient language -- Aramaic.
