Where Is Lebanon ?
Formally Lebanon is known as the Republic of Lebanon. It is situated in the western part of the Asian continent, along the Mediterranean Sea. Its neighbors are Syria and Palestine. Lebanon is regarded as the gateway to the Mediterranean and the hinterlands of Arabia. |
It is believed that the history of Lebanon is more than seven thousand years old. It was initially inhabited by the Phoenicians, who were sailors, and they controlled the region for nearly two thousand five hundred years from 3000 BC to 539 BC.
Later the country was part of the Turkish Empire. However, once the Empire fell apart after the First World War, Lebanon became a French colony. Lebanon achieved its independence in 1943.
The country has a one of a kind political system where the power is shared between the various religious sects in the country.
After the French left Lebanon in 1946 for good, the country was quite stable without experiencing any political or religious problems. It prospered quite a bit due to its agricultural, banking and tourism industries. The capital city of Beirut became a tourist hub with people coming there from all over the world. However, then Lebanon had a civil war, which started in 1975 and lasted until 1990. This saw the country suffering economically.
After the civil war ended, the country once again painstakingly rebuilt its tourist industry. This continued until July 2006 when the war between the Hezbollah and Israel broke out. During this war, Lebanon lost many civilians and sustained a lot of damage to its infrastructure.
Today, Lebanon is back to rebuilding its economy. In fact, while the rest of world was facing recession in 2009, Lebanon boasted of a 9 percent growth in its economy, and also managed to have the best tourist year of its entire existence.
