Religion Of Syria
If you visit Syria, you will be surprised with the secularism in the country. Though Muslims are in majority in the country, Islam is not considered to be the religion of the state. |
All religions are treated equally in Syria. Christians are allowed to build churches, and both Islam and Christianity are taught in schools.
Religions of Syria:
Muslims are in majority in the country. However, it is the Shia Muslims who are maximum in number. Out of these, nearly eighty percent are from Syria, while the rest are Kurds, Turkish, Palestianians and Circassians. The Muslims in Syria follow the Islamic Shariyat law for all matters. The Shia Muslims are not into politics to that extent and this could be because the sect has the least education in the country.
There are many different Christian sects in Syria. The Christian population comprises around eight percent of the total population of Syria. Roman Catholics and Protestants are present in the country along with those that follow the different Orthodox denominations.
The Druzes are also part of the religions of Syria. This sect follows tenets that are based on the teachings of Aristotle and the Psalms. The sect does not allow its male members to marry more than once, they believe in life after death, or reincarnation. As a result, most Muslims label them as heretics.
Even Jews live in Syria, but there numbers are dwindling as most of them have migrated to the US. The Jewish community is mostly living in the city of Aleppo. Though there are no travel restrictions, Syria does not allow its Jewish community to emigrate to Israel.
