Traditions In Syria
There are many traditions followed in Syrian. For instance, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan is marked with fasting and praying in the mosque. |
In Syria, the holy month is celebrated by decorating the houses, shops and streets with lights. At sunset the fast is broken, and then people head to market where they partake in sweets like Knafeh, which a kind a sweet cheese that is baked. They also eat a special bread known as Maarouk.
Family bonds are very strong in the country. Usually the fast for Ramadan is broken along with invited members of the family. After the fast is broken, the family then heads to the mosque to say their prayers and also attend religious lesions. Once this is over, it is again time to eat sweets and drink coffee.
Usually the sweets and dishes are prepared by the women of the house. If you visit a Syrian house, you will get dishes like Fatouch, Taboula, Kebbeh, Fatayer and a juice made at home, which is known as Irq as-sus. In addition, you will get a whole host of sweets like Awameh, Knafeh, Ketaayef, Nabulsiya, Shakaek al Numan and Mathlukeh.
It is a tradition in Syria to listen to stories from eons ago, and these stories are always narrated by a person who is a specialized storyteller. Also, there will be religious songs played by bands in mosques and large restaurants. Some five star hotels are known to up large tents at their entrances to ensure that the nights are enjoyed by people by listening to traditional Syrian and religious songs.
