United Arab Emirates Language
The official language of the United Arab Emirates is Arabic. |
The native speakers in the UAE practice a mixture of Islam and Bedouin culture and hence their language is Arabic as is the norm among these cultures. However, it is common to hear a number of other languages in the UAE ranging from Hindi and Urdu to Tagalog. This is because of the presence of hundreds of thousands of guest workers from the Indian Sub continent as well as from the Philippines who have come to work in the UAE.The Emirates are more liberal than the other Gulf States and this gives them a cosmopolitan edge over their neighbors. Because of this, it is not uncommon to get along with English as the language of exchange in the UAE.
Because of the preponderance of malls and shopping districts that cater to all classes of travelers and shoppers, there is a need for a single unifying language in the UAE and English performs this function well. However, it is better to know a few words of the native language in case one is lost and needs directions to get around. Apart from this, the locals are friendly and most of them talk a smattering of English and this should help you get by in the UAE. In recent times, there has been much controversy about the rights of the guest workers and hence it might not be prudent to enter into conversations regarding this issue. It is better to stick to the official language in communications and then use English for conversations.
