Yemen History Timeline
Officially known as the Republic of Yemen, Yemen is situated in southwest Asia at the Arabian Peninsula. |
It has Saudi Arabia and Oman as its neighbor, and the other sides are bordered by the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and the Arabian Sea. Yemen is the only country in the region with republican form of government.
The timeline of Yemen history has been given below:
1500s - Ottomans conquer part of Yemen especially Aden, from the Zaidi dynasty.
1600 - Ottomans are defeated.
1839 - British Empire establishes their rule in Aden.
1849 - Ottoman empire conquers the northern Yemen. However, there is a lot of revolt.
1918 - The Ottoman Empire ceases to exist. Northern Yemen becomes independent and is comes under the rule of Imam Yahya.
1948 - Imam Yahya is assassinated. However, his son Ahmad successfully thwarts attempts of feudal rule and claims the rights to rule.
1962 - Imam Ahmad dies. The royal scion is hinted to succeed, but a military coup overpowers the royal scion to establish Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). This leads to civil war between the royal family and the republican army.
1967 - Southern Yemen is formed. The nation is officially known as the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY).
1971 - Government orders a crackdown on the rebels.
1972 - Clashes between YAR and PDRY. A ceasefire agreement is brokered by Arab League.
In the latter part of 1970s, efforts were on to unite YAR and PDRY.
1986 - Thousands killed due to infighting. The President Ali Nasser Muhammad is sentenced to death for sedition and a new government takes over.
1990 - 1994 - attempts were made in vain to unite the warring southern and northern regions.
1994 May - 1994 July - Northern forces in an attempt to split the unification, take control of Aden. All the prominent southern leaders are given death sentence.
2000 October - In a suicide attack, USS Cole, an US naval ship is destroyed.
2001 February - The voters support constitutional reforms
2001 November - 2004 March - Attempts to crackdown on terror in Yemen
