Train Travel In Alabama
Train travel in Alabama is no less than an adventure. There are two Amtrak operated passenger trains that run in the Alabama State. The first is the Crescent that serves the stations of Anniston, Birmingham, and Tuscaloosa, in reverse order. The second train is called the Sunset Limited. It mainly serves Mobile in the South. |
Alabama is known worldwide for its fascinating excursion trains for tourists and train rides that operate within the boundaries of the state. However, there are only a limited number of these rides available in the area now.
The two most popular tourist railroads include the excursions offered by the North Alabama Railroad Museum and the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. The former offers a thrilling 1.5-hour train travel from April every year through end of December. This train ride is unique as it uses 2 restored Alco S-2 diesel locomotives and features the restored railway depots of St. Louis, Chattanooga, and Nashville. The historic train ride operated by the latter is arranged for tourists during peak season from early spring months starting from March to mid fall, which is October. It features both the diesel and the steam locomotives.
The history of train travel in Alabama dates back to 1832, when Tuscumbia in Alabama was connected to Decatur through the little chartered, horse-powered Tuscumbia Railroad. It was fourth such railroad to be built in the country and the first in the Western Alleghenies. In future, train travel by numerous classic railroads, like Gulf –Mobile-Ohio Railroad, Central Illinois-Nashville-Louisville Railroad, Southern Railway, and the Atlantic Coast Line would be possible as these fallen flag railroads restore their access to the state.
