Alaska is interestingly at a similar distance from both New York and Japan. It entered the historical union of the states on January 3, 1959 to become the forty-ninth state. The largest state of the Union, Alaska stretches over a span of nearly 586,412 square miles. It is nearly 1390 miles in height and 2,210 miles in width.
The highest air temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded in 1915 at Fort Yukon. But you would certainly like to know the history of this beautiful state. The word Alaska comes from an Aleut word which means great land. Some do consider it as a mainland. It, however, evolved from words like Alashka to Aliaska and finally Alaska.
There are certain other names which go like the Territory of Baranov, Seward’s Folly and Russian America.
William Seward who was the state secretary at the regime of Lincoln purchased it from Russia. The agreement was duly signed on May 27, 1867. However, the transfer took place on 18th October, 1867 and hence this date is known as the 18th Alaska Day. The capital of Alaska is Juneau is situated in the southeast region. The nickname that this state popularly enjoys is called the last frontier. The state seal originated in 1910 which depicts rays forming above the mountains. There is a smelter that can be noticed which stands for mining. You can also notice the train which simply denotes the railways and simultaneously ships indicate sea. The trees in the seal stand for Alaska’s forests. The three shocks purely denote agriculture in this beautiful state.
