You might know that Alaska has a much longer coastline than all the other states combined. It is one of the largest states in the US. Originally it was bought from Russia in 1867 for nearly $7.2 million. Alaska is strangely at an equal distance from Japan and New York.
The interiors always have a mix of high and low temperatures. Juneau, the capital city of Alaska is not connected by road till the northern part of Alaska. Since the last census the population of Alaska has increased by 9.5 percent and numerically accounts to 59,361 as on 1 July 2008. Nearly half of the population of Alaska resides in the Anchorage metropolitan sector.
Coming to time zone Alaska falls under the Alaska Time Zone. Although daylight saving time is quite prevalent, it is considered in St. Lawrence Island and Aleutian Islands.
The Alaska Time Zone mainly covers the mainland of the State, but does not operate in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. It functions like the other states. Daylight saving time prevails at places where the time is normally shifted by one hour. These further results in an eight hour difference between GMT. During the end of summer months, the time is shifted back by one hour thereby resulting in a nine hour different behind GMT.
However, do remember the Aleutian Islands and St. Lawrence Island are on Hawaii-Aleutian Time, which is normally ten hours behind GMT and where Daylight saving time is not followed.
