When Did Alaska Become A State ?

Proclaimed as a state on January 3, 1959, Alaska was the 49th state to join the Union. It was purchased from Russia at a cost of $7.2 million in 1867. Located at same distance from New York and Japan, Alaska enjoys a strategically important geographical location in the country. Also, designated as one of the largest states in U.S., it encompasses a total area of over 586,412 square miles. Since the last census the population of Alaska has increased by 9.5 percent and numerically accounts to 59,361 as on 1 July 2008.

But how did this place emerge as a state. Alaska’s land for a very long time was under the US Congress and did not have a single representative. Hence, the hope for a full-fledged statehood was felt amongst most Alaskans. In early nineteenth century James Wickersham introduced the statehood bill in the congress meeting. Although, the motive was nice it gathered very little backup from Alaskans and the Congress.

However, in 1955, the legislation was passed and Alaskans had a right to vote for their representative. They elected nearly 55 representatives all across the region. A meeting was held at the University of Alaska to make writing for the need of a state in 1956. The people’s constitution was formed and Congress did grant the necessary support and agreed for a full-fledged independent state. The proposition that was accepted was known as Alaska Tennessee Plan. Initially the people of Alaska elected William. A. Egan and Ernest Gruening as their representatives.
