Facts About The Golden Gate Bridge
The world’s first longest suspension bridge, known as the Golden Gate Bridge, is located in the San Francisco City in California. After the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was constructed in New York in the year 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge lost its first rank with regard to the lengths of similar suspension bridges in the world. |
A few facts about the Golden Gate Bridge are:
- At present, Golden Gate Bridge is ranked at the 9th position in length among all the suspension bridges constructed across the globe till date. It measures nearly 1.7 miles in length, which also includes its approaches.
- The middle span of this suspension bridge is nearly 4,200 feet long and 90 feet wide.
- A new record was set in the history of architectural construction safety, provided the fact that its construction led to the death of only 11 workers. As many as 19 workers were saved or rescued owing to the use of net underneath the construction floor.
- The bridge weighed 894,500 tons at the time of being built, but now weighs only 887,000 tons due to new material used for decking.
- The bridge has two 746 ft tall towers that measure up to 500 feet in height above the roadway surface.
- The total weight of each of the two bridge towers is 44,000 tons. They stand on a leg measuring 33x54 feet and supported with the help of 600,000 rivets.
- Total of 83,000 tons of steel that went into the construction of this historical bridge was imported from Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania via the Panama Canal.
Other equipment used in construction included 7,260 feet of cables, 128 high-pressure sodium lamps of 25 watt each and 24 low-pressure lamps of 35 watts each for the roadway and the sidewalks respectively.
