Golden Gate Bridge History

The Golden Gate Bridge is perhaps the most famous bridge in history. It is located in San Francisco and it is a kind of suspension bridge that connects the city to Marin County. The bridge starts from San Francisco Bay.

At the time the bridge was constructed, it was the longest suspension bridge in the entire world. It held this position until the year 1964 when the title went to Verrazano Narrows Bridge, which was built in New York.

Before the Golden Gate Bridge was made, the only short route from San Francisco to Marin County was via a boat that used to go across San Francisco Bay.

Though the ferry service was started around 1820, they were not regular until the 1840 when the service was mainly being used to transport water to San Francisco. The Sausalito Land and Ferry Company service was launched in the year of 1867 and over the course of time transformed into Golden Gate Ferry Company, which had the reputation of the largest operation of ferries in the later 1920s. The Southern Pacific’s ferry service was profitable and had become an important factor to the regional economy due to its automobile ferry services.

The journey in the ferry spanned about twenty minutes at the cost of $1 for a vehicle. Although served predominantly by ferries, San Francisco was still known as the largest city and since it lacked a stable link with the communities around it, the rat e of its growth was lower than the national average due to which many people felt the need to let San Francisco connect with Marin County. But, the experts differed since they felt a bridge across the strait that spanned 6,700 feet would not be possible especially with strong currents that would make it difficult for a bridge to be constructed and operated thereafter.
