How Big Is The Golden Gate Bridge ?
The San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge was the first longest suspension bridge constructed in the world. It was constructed to link Marin County with San Francisco city. Its length spanned from the San Francisco Bay at its opening into the vast Pacific Ocean. |
The Golden Gate Bridge ranks 9th in the list of the longest suspension bridges with length being 1.7 miles and also include the approaches. The middle span stretches out to about 4,200 feet and it is around 90 feet wide. The total weight of the bridge at the time of being built was 894,500 tons which has now reduced to 887, 00 tons due to the usage of new material in the decking. The towers on the bridge are of 746 feet from the water and stand at 500 feet over the roadway.
Each tower weighs at 44,000 tons that stand on a leg of 33 X 54 supported by 600,000 rivets each. 83,000 tons of steel and 7,260 feet of cable were used in the making of this bridge. The 2 main cables go over the main towers, and they are securely fixed at the anchorages on both the ends. Each of these cables was made of 27,572 wire strands, which go to a length of 80,000 miles including both the cables.
The steel used in the construction of the bridge was made in Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania which were then shipped via the Panama Canal. The roadway on the bridge is equipped with 128 lights powered through the sodium lamps of 25 watt with high pressure while the ones on the sidewalk are of 35 watt with low pressure and are 24 in number.
