How Many Miles Is The Golden Gate Bridge ?
The famous suspension bridge of the city of San Francisco, namely the Golden Gate Bridge, is known all over the world for its sophisticated architecture and engineering. |
This suspension bridge was once the world’s longest bridge of this kind. However, several similar bridges of bigger lengths were made in different parts of the world.
It was in 1964 that the bridge lost its reputation of being the world’s longest suspension bridge to New York’s Verrazano Narrows Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge spans from the San Francisco Bay opening to Pacific Ocean, thus establishing an important link between San Francisco and Marin County.
Presently ranked as the 9th longest suspension bridge, it measures 1.7 miles in total length. Its middle span has a length of 4200 feet and width of 90 feet. Its original weight was exactly 894,500 tons, which has now trimmed down to 887,000 tons. The height of towers on the bridge is 746 feet from water surface, and 500 feet from the surface of the roadway that has 6 lanes. Each tower weighs at nearly 44,000 tons and is supported by a leg measuring 33 x 54 feet in dimensions. As much as 83,000 tons of steel and precisely 7,260 feet cable were required for this bridge’s construction.
There are 2 main cables that go over the 2 main towers, while being securely anchored at both the ends. Each of the 2 main bridge cables comprises of 27,572 wire strands. These strands would measure up to a length of 80,000 miles, if all of them from the two cables are joined end-to-end with each other.
